Major Arcana
Tarot Card Meanings
The Major Arcana are tarot’s 22 named trump cards, numbered from The Fool (0) to The World (21). This complete Major Arcana card list links each archetype to its meaning and uses the sequence to notice larger patterns without handing decisions over to a prediction.

What are the Major Arcana?
The Major Arcana are the 22 trump cards of a standard tarot deck. Their imagery centres on broad human themes—beginnings, agency, attachment, upheaval, hope, judgement and completion—rather than one literal event.
In a reading, a Major Arcana card can be useful as a signal to zoom out: what pattern is larger than the immediate detail? That does not mean fate has been fixed. It means the card gives you a bigger lens.

The Fool’s Journey.
Modern tarot teaching often arranges the Major Arcana as “The Fool’s Journey”: The Fool moves through encounters that can be read as stages of experience, from possibility and skill to relationship, challenge, transformation and integration.
It is a useful narrative framework for remembering the cards. It should not be mistaken for a single historical doctrine or a forecast that every life must follow the same sequence.
What is visibly happening in the card?
What larger theme does that scene suggest?
What remains under your control?
What fact would change your interpretation?
Zoom level matters.
A simple distinction is useful: Major Arcana often invite the reader to look at a larger pattern; Minor Arcana often give more texture around the day-to-day situation. Neither is automatically more “powerful” or more predictive.
| Major Arcana | Minor Arcana | |
|---|---|---|
| Count | 22 cards | 56 cards |
| Common focus | Archetypes, transitions, broad patterns | Situations, reactions, relationships, practical detail |
| Reading question | What larger pattern deserves attention? | How is this pattern showing up in ordinary life? |
Some decks swap the numbering of Strength and Justice. That is a deck tradition difference, not an error.
Do not escalate the drama.
If a spread contains several Major Arcana cards, many readers treat that as an invitation to look for a shared theme. Hunch does not treat it as evidence that a “huge destiny event” must happen.
Try a pattern check
- Name the common tension across the cards in one neutral sentence.
- List one part of the situation you can influence and one part you cannot.
- Choose a small action that would still make sense if the cards had never been drawn.
Major Arcana basics.
How many Major Arcana cards are there?
There are 22 in a standard tarot deck, conventionally numbered 0 through 21.
Why is The Fool numbered 0?
In many modern decks The Fool is numbered 0, which fits its role as openness or potential before the sequence begins. Historical ordering and numbering varied across decks.
What does it mean if a spread has many Major Arcana cards?
A grounded interpretation is to look for a larger recurring theme. It does not prove that a particular fate or life event is inevitable.
Can Major Arcana cards be reversed?
Yes, if your reading method uses reversals. Hunch treats reversal meanings as optional lenses such as blocked, internalised or overexpressed themes.
